MedSpeed LSR Helps a Patient in Need
MedSpeed LSR, Johnny Rodriguez, began his day as he would any other. Along his route he had a new patient home to visit. When he arrived, he did not know how to enter the home and followed a path around the house. Even from afar, he was sure something wasn’t right. Follow the journey of how Johnny went the extra mile and aided in saving the life of a home healthcare patient.
When did you notice something was wrong?
I was able to tell as soon as I walked around the path to the home that something was off. As I climbed the stairs, I saw the patient lying face down on the ground inside the home.
Can you describe what happened next?
I called out to the patient, but he was unable to respond. As I got closer, the patient was able to communicate that he needed help. I lifted him and helped him to a nearby couch. I surrounded him with pillows to keep him comfortable and upright. I called 911 and spend the next 15 minutes talking to him and keeping him calm. The patient had been stuck on the floor for more than two hours before I arrived.
How were you feeling while waiting for the paramedics to arrive?
I was scared and nervous, but I stayed calm for the patient. I was praying I did enough to help him and did the right thing. It feels surreal when I think back on it. What if I hadn’t arrived when I did? How much longer would he have been there? I’m so grateful I was able to help this man stay around for his family.
What inspired you to go the extra mile for this patient?
I am proud father and a proud LSR. I love delivering people’s medication to their front doors and seeing their reactions and appreciation. Growing up, my mother was ill often, so I feel a special understanding of what families are going through and how essential patient care and compassion is.
What advice would you give to your fellow LSRs if they find themselves in a similar situation?
Always be aware of your surroundings and keep love in your heart for other people. I consider what I would feel if it was me in need of help.
