Healthcare logistics, sustainability and ESG: What is the path forward?
According to The Commonwealth Fund, healthcare in the US is responsible for as much as 8.5% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. Last year, 15% of hospitals joined the White House Health Sector Climate Pledge, while others announced green purchasing initiatives and farm-to-table cafeteria programs.
Leading organizations are focusing on the “E,” or environmental/sustainability aspect, of ESG but are often overlooking a huge area of their business that impacts it. 80% of overall healthcare emissions are generated by the production and transportation of goods and services. An expanded focus on sustainability efforts outside its walls of the hospital, could generate significant sustainability impact.
In this article I wrote for Modern Healthcare, I outline the steps healthcare leaders can take to drive sustainability forward. It is imperative that we remember, health isn’t just what happens in a doctor’s office or hospital. It’s about the environment around us, and everything people need to live healthy lives.
